Peace Corps
The Peace Corps is an organization that promotes world peace and friendship.
It was established in 1961 and operates in 139 countries. The Peace Corps’ mission
is to:
• help countries train men and women to acquire needed skills
• help Americans understand the outside world
• help the outside world gain a better understanding of Americans
The Peace Corps offers a variety of volunteer programs in government, education,
business, healthcare, information technology, agriculture, and the environment.
While serving, you will receive:
• a living allowance equivalent to an amount the local people you’re
serving live on
• medical and dental care
• vacation time
• reimbursement for transportation expenses to and from your country of
service
After you return home from your service, you will receive $6,000 to spend as
you wish.
Your Peace Corps experience will provide you with job skills that could be useful
during your career. Also, if you complete your volunteer assignment, you qualify
for help on looking for a job, as well as employment advantages if you look for
a federal-government job.
