Spending Money: Stop and Take Stock

Do I Need It? Or Do I Just Want It?

Spending money is easy. Face it—it’s fun!
But what is not so easy is spending money wisely.

Knowing the difference between our “needs” and “wants” is an important part of learning to manage money now, and for the rest of our lives!

A “need” is something we must have to survive, such as nutritious food, basic clothing, and a place to live.
A “want” is something we would like to have but don’t need right away, or at all, like electronic games or designer clothes.

Sometimes it’s difficult to see the difference between a want and a need.

We all need food. But instead of a sensible meal, we may want to buy a milk shake or a bag of chips.

Before you buy something, ask yourself, “Do I need this item, or do I just want it?” You may be surprised at how many things are actually “wants."
