Managing Your Money

The Basics of Budgeting

Have you ever dropped a can of soda and sadly watched how quickly it drained, even if the hole was really small? Your money is the same way. Small purchases, even if they seem inexpensive, can add up to big bucks over time.

75 cents + 55 cents = $1.30 each day
$1.30 x 5 days = $6.50 each week
$6.50 x 4 weeks = $26 each month
$26 x 9 months = $234 each school year

Let’s say Tony buys a soda and a candy bar every day from a vending machine at school. The soda costs 75 cents and the candy bar 55 cents. That seems pretty affordable.

Let’s take a look at the numbers. How much is Tony spending each week? Each month? During the entire school year?

See how those inexpensive treats can really add up over time?

Creating a spending diary will help you see the effect of spending money over time.
