The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Form

To qualify for a government loan, you need to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. The FAFSA process determines how much money the government will loan you to go to school. These loans are referred to as student loans (see “Student Loans”).

You can get a FAFSA form from your school guidance counselor, by contacting 1800-4FED-AID (1-800-433-3243), or at the FAFSA Web site (www.fafsa.ed.gov), where you can also get information about the FAFSA application process. Additionally, the Education Planner Website (www.educationplanner.com) has a tutorial on the FAFSA application process, and lists the types of information you need to have ready before you begin filling out the application.

Be wary of organizations that charge a fee to submit your FAFSA application, or to find you financial aid for school. Some of these organizations are legitimate and some are scams. Generally, your school or the U.S. Department of Education will provide you with free assistance in getting financial aid.
