Applying for College

To look at typical college applications, go to The Common Application Web site at www.commonapp.org.
To get into a college, you must first apply to go to it. That means you fill out a form, or a college application, and list your high school coursework, grades, and a variety of other items such as:
Your extracurricular activities (clubs, sports, or hobbies)
Jobs you have now or had in the past
Scores on your college entrance exams, such as the SAT
(Scholastic Aptitude Test) and ACT (American College Testing)

Additionally, most colleges require that you include these items with your application:
Letters of recommendation (usually two or three) from people who are familiar with your
academic achievements, such as your teachers and school counselor.
A personal essay stating why you would like to go to a particular college and why you feel qualified to attend.

Once you complete your college application, you send it to the college admissions department of the school to which you want to attend. The college admissions staff will review your application and determine whether you are qualified to attend.
