Why Take Algebra?

Formulas? Graphs? How could they ever be important — I'll NEVER use them!

Think again.
Algebra requires us to think in abstract ways. Yet, we’re used to thinking in concrete ways: Finding out how much an iPod® costs, getting directions to a friend’s house, deciding what color shirt to buy, singing a favorite song. Concrete thinking is thinking about things we can see, touch, or hear.

But in abstract thinking, we are forced to think of non-ordinary things. Like truth, justice, or in the case of algebra, figuring out an unknown in order to solve a problem. Problem solving is a skill you will use in every part of your life because, like it or not, life presents problems that must be solved.

Studying algebra will help you build a “better brain.” * You may not notice right away, but the skills you learn in algebra will help you think in more complex and creative ways, in all parts of your life. And your ability to solve complex problems in creative ways will pay off in any college you go to and in any career you pursue.

Open up your mind and explore a different way to think. Take algebra!

Getting into College

Some students go to college and some don’t. What makes the difference? Math. Students who take algebra I and geometry in high school have about an 80 percent chance of ending up in college. That 80 percent remains the same no matter what your race, religion, or family income is.
